I have “run” the 42km Nice to Cannes Marathon every year since it started in 2008. In recent years it has become less of an athletic challenge and more of a struggle – I am 66 years old.
As a sort of diversion to the struggle I now take along my GoPro camera and try record my thoughts as I move down the coast. Last year, 2022, was my first attempt at this and I was quite pleased with the result with over 600 views, which is really good for me. I was so pleased I replaced my GoPro Hero 4 (which had some battery problems) with a new GoPro Hero 11. I used this to great effect on the ultra marathon called the Marathon des Sables in Morocco earlier in 2023 – over 5,000 views for that video.
My 15th Nice Cannes was even more eventful than my 14th. This year the weather looked wonderful but was in fact really windy and the sea was in storm mode. So much in storm mode that the race course had to be diverted just before Juan-Les-Pins due to waves crashing over the road. So impressive I made the waves their own short video.
For the actual marathon I ended up making two videos. A quick musical one (!) and a longer version with all the talking and some analysis at the end. As usual my intent was to present some of the magnificent scenery of the course, along with the experience of doing a marathon at this age. I hope you think I succeeded.
